29/06/11 Library work

Learning Resources
- 15mins talking to Keith about Atom archive program & the total lack of activity by the uni in getting it working; they say it’s not priority but surely it would add to the student experience if they could search for & look at archive material?! It’s uncatalogued and invisible still!
 - Told to take old/unused journals off the shelves and discard them. I suggested the Archivist might want to see them first (as some go back to the 1900's): he did. I told him later about this & he said:

Welcome to my world, John!
A twisted hideous scarred place haunted by the screams of the lost made bearable only by the restorative light from the refreshing uplands of saved journals and redeemed archival documents and artefacts.

- Took unused journals (under Aca. Librarians orders) off shelves, issued to Discard, stamped them & binned them
 - Academic Support meeting with academic librarians: Discussing matters for next year so not really irrelevant to me

Professional Development
 - 30mins talking to a staff member about how to apply to Sheffield, Masters courses, funding etc. as he was thinking about it but he seemed really timid about it - odd
 - Continued my Leeds Uni note taker job app

28/06/11 Library work

Academic Support
 - Put next Z cabinet shelf books onto trolley & put in Archives for archivist to check anything can be returned to Main stock
- Took last weeks Z cabinet books trolley from Keith & gave to Karen to verify Main stock book selection
- Changed records of next batch of 22 books from ref to main stock and marked 2 for discard
- 1hr Librarian enquiries with Catherine: only 1 phone call asking how to search for dissertations on the catalogue

Publicity
 - Editing articles/photos already submitted for the staff newsletter
- Mystery library visit to Oakwood public library: not as bad as I thought it would be as I could hide away and write but I still find it hard asking questions I know the answers to!

Thing 2

After looking at a lot of blogs, I am heartened to see that I'm not the only one finding it hard to start/continue blogging, but I'm sure, like everything, it will become easier with practice.

I was also happy to see people blogging already with lib. experience so if nothing else, the CPD23 'project' will hopefully be a massive networking experience for us all.

27/06/11 Library work

Disability Office
- Finished finding and writing a summary of useful guides on using the assistive technology software in the library: interesting as I can briefly see what programs can do but time consuming
 - Contd. looking for new dyslexia/study skills / large print reference items for the Disability Resource Area in Amazon and adding details to the spreadsheet
- 40min meeting with Claire about Atom archive software: No job through WYAS and the uni is still thinking about it but need a progress  report.
*Wampserver crashed 5 times in 30mins so less robust than before?!
*Claire let slip they had no money now so it would be an idea for a few years time - why
does this uni put no money/effort into archives?

Publicity
                 - Editing articles/photos already submitted for the staff newsletter

24/06/11 Library work

Profess. Development
 - Started Leeds Uni note taker job application
Offsite office
 - Checked in/reshelved 4 books from offsite student & emailed them confirmation
 - Relabeled/reshelved the 12 Euro Doc Centre (EDC) books from 23/06/11
 - Produced EDC book report to find EDC books I had shelved before returning from recat. (oops)
 - Checked in 16 EDC books using barcodes to save hunting the books (time consuming, as all things are with Sirsi…)
Publicity
 - Redistributed 'How to ' guides and leaflets in the Library to cover losses on the 1st floor (who are taking them?!)
 - Printed 3 posters about the forthcoming power shutdown & put up around library

23/06/11 Library work

23/06/11 Thursday
( Tech)
- More blog / Twitter profile editing
- Catching up with Special collection book record alteration (ie. marking 40 books as Special collection & ref.) & discarding 2 (ie. issuing to DISCARD, stamping them as DISCARD and putting in recycle bin) Interesting looking at old/weird books but hugely irritating as I know it will have to be done again when they decide which part of Special collections it will be stored - why can't they think of that now?

( LEOS)
- Downloaded Euro Direct Logo, added text and emailed poster to Helen for approval
- Found 12 EDC books needing re-cataloguing, issued them to recat. and boxed them up for the BSU
- Changed classmark of 12 EDC books from local system to Dewey
 - Added multi-sheet SUM formulae to the Offsite Student enquiry form and made it shared but couldn't see how to copy sheets in a shared workbook - asked Russ

Yesterday - addendum

I've been keeping a semi-reflective diary of what I do each day as Grad trainee and so I now will add this here, in amongst my CPD23 ramblings.

22/06/11 Wed
(Learning Resources)
- Updated a database name, description & link on the Lib website database list
 - Contd. deleting duplicate lines & copying the holds policy for each journal in a subset into the main journal s'sheet: just data entry work but too much of this & not enough useful work for me?
 - Set up Twitter account & started blog through CPD23

(Publicity)
- Creating QR code labels for all the different guides, but minus the QR codes until the guide website locations have been decided on (oh, the suspense); simple, text editing.
- Reading more tweets/blogs about the New Prof conf.

The Beginning

Right. Where do I begin!

Yes, I've never done this before and not even Tweeted; I think I have never used these before because I thought why would anyone be interested in what I say (naively/foolishly as it often is) and what do I know? (about librarianship, that is)

Nonetheless, after Helen's inspiring paper at the NPC2011, lets start now!

(Thanks for reading so far!)
