Thing 4: Current awareness

Twitter
Although I repeatedly got told by people when I first started my Lib. Grad. trainee role to join Twitter I put it off & successfully found other distractions. To be honest, I also thought Twitter was full of bored people just writing useless twaddle & I didn't think I would have the time to continually read everything.

After NPC11 I thought I would try it. Yes, I pruned a few of the people I was following initially because I thought it was too much, but reading links , forwarded by other people, I can see the brilliance of it.

There is so much still to look at (lists, live Tweet sessions, tweets before/during/after an event etc.) but Rome wasn't built in a day!

RSS
I used Google Reader initially but then iGoogle was suggested to me. I like this much more as each feed is in a box and the boxes for each feed can be spread over the window so you can see all the feeds at once, much clearer (in my humble opinion) than Reader.

On the down side it's just another source of stuff to read but like Twitter, there are nuggets of use buried in there!

Pushnote
I'd never heard of this before CPD23 (I feel I'm not alone reading other blogs!) and on reading about it, it didn't make me think it would be so useful. I signed up just to find a webpage people were commenting on (not that easy, ignoring The Guardian's page) & to see what people were saying.

Whilst the idea is quite good I can't help thinking why bother; if you find something is good you email/tweet people the link or mention it in your blog & the people using it now wouldn't (& perhaps ever?) read/comment on pages that would be useful to CPD23 folk. I agree with Diana that it's being held back by not being used by enough people but perhaps there is a reason why......after all, you'd think twice before eating in an empty restaurant that's next a busier one.... (called 'Twitter'?!)

Thing 3

- I have changed my blog/Twitter picture so it’s a bit more useful if to be used for recognition purposes

- On IE, (using Live Search) although it finds 2 John Bottomleys on Facebook, I don’t appear in the first 5 pages (gave up looking after that)
 - Does this matter?

- On Firefox, (using Google search) I’m on the first page as a Postgrad having left Glasgow Uni and on the 2nd page as a photo of me in a cross country race. Neither my Twitter, blog or Facebook accounts show up. (I have now just registered my blog URL with Google so that’s a start)

- I’m also not sure of the need to actually ‘brand’ yourself; would an employer think more of you if they noticed, when they had found you, that your Twitter & blog layouts were similar?
However, I’ve just looked at Jo Alcock’s Twitter and blog and although I was cynical, it does convey the impression you are serious and know about modern technologies!
